What are the services provided by MD Connected?


MD Connected provides two different virtual services:

  • MD Connected Virtual Doctors (ON, BC, & MB)
    1. Offers patients a full complement of virtual healthcare services such as prescription renewals, general consultations, sexual health, men’s and women’s health, mental health, sick notes and forms, and more.
    2. Referral based program for conditions a pharmacist cannot treat or for minor ailment assessments that need to be referred.
    3. The integration with MedEssist automatically transfers the pharmacy’s name, address, phone, and fax number to MD Connected to enable patients to easily return to the pharmacy for any prescriptions.

  • MD Connected Travel (Canada-wide)
    1. Partnership program between MedEssist and MD Connected to enable pharmacies to easily submit travel recommendations to virtual travel health clinicians.
    2. 10 minute turnaround time to receive personalized prescriptions to ensure patients are well-prepared for their travels.
    3. Participating pharmacists for this program must have travel health training in order to participate. Free online training can be found here.
    4. This feature is only available for Professional Plans.

What are the costs associated with each service?


There are distinct differences between the costs for each service:

  1. MD Connected Virtual Doctors (ON, BC, & MB)
    1. Covered by BC & MB provincial health authorities.
    2. For residents in Ontario, a $50/visit or $15/month service fee is charged to the patient for accessing this service. Note: the pharmacy is not charged at any time for this program.

  1. MD Connected Travel (Canada-wide)
    1. For each pharmacy consultation submitted that results in the generation of a prescription(s), there is a $45 charge to the pharmacy.
    2. To recoup the cost associated with referral to this service, we recommend the pharmacy collects a $60-70 service fee from the patient for the travel consultation performed at the pharmacy.

What is the setup process for these MD Connected services in MedEssist?


The MD Connected virtual services have 2 separate setup processes. After navigating to the Integrations & Referrals section in Settings, select the corresponding service from the drop-down menu to begin setup:

  1. MD Connected Virtual Doctors (ON, BC, & MB)
    1. Click Sign Integration Agreement to view the integration license agreement.
    2. After reading through the terms, fill out your information at the bottom of the agreement and click Submit.
    3. A confirmation window will appear and a copy of the signed agreement will be sent to the email that was inputted.
    4. MD Connected will receive the signed agreement then email back an integration link in 24-48 hours.
    5. This link is then pasted into the MD Connected Link textbox to complete the integration.
    6. Turning on the toggle for Show on Booking Portal will display the MD Connected service on your digital storefront (in the Our Services page, under the Medical or Telemedicine Services header).

  1. MD Connected Travel (Canada-wide)
    1. Click Sign Agreement to view the travel health service agreement.
    2. After reading through the terms, fill out your information at the bottom of the agreement and click Submit.
    3. A confirmation window will appear and a copy of the signed agreement will be sent to the email that was inputted.
    4. The integration is now complete and you will be able to use the MD Connected Travel service.

How do I access/use the services provided by MD Connected?


Both MD Connected virtual services are used in different ways:

  1. MD Connected Virtual Doctors (ON, BC, & MB)
    1. The patient is directed to this service after the pharmacist has assessed the need for referral.
    2. The pharmacist can directly send the patient the integration link URL which will redirect the patient to your pharmacy’s affiliated webpage with MD Connected.
      1. The patient can also be directed to MD Connected through your pharmacy’s digital storefront webpage by navigating to the Our Services page, and locating MD Connected under Medical or Telemedicine Services.
    3. At this point, the patient will be prompted to create an account with MD Connected to be able to access the virtual doctor service.
    4. After consultation with a virtual provider, MD Connected will be able to send any issued prescriptions to your pharmacy.

  1. MD Connected Travel (Canada-wide)
    1. This service is initiated by the pharmacist during a travel consultation.
    2. After the patient has filled out the travel health intake form, the pharmacist will review the travel consult and click Use Virtual Provider at the beginning of the appointment.
    3. The pharmacist will then click Submit pre-assessment form(s) below to place the current travel consult in queue for a clinician at MD Connected to review (Note: the pharmacy is not charged the $45 fee at this step).


  1. After completing the consultation with the patient, the pharmacist will enter and document the desired travel recommendations and click Save.
  2. Upon saving, the pharmacist will once again click Use Virtual Provider and a confirmation window will appear reminding the pharmacist of the $45 fee that is charged to the card on file for this virtual service.
  3. The pharmacist will sign off by typing their name and clicking Submit pharmacist recommendations.
  4. The virtual clinician will then respond with their assessment and prescriptions within 10 minutes.
